I have now been watching Season 7 of Black Mirror. I am impressed, again, with the writing and storytelling power of Charlie Brooker.

How can we learn from Charlie Brooker’s storytelling genius?

Charlie Brooker remains one of television’s most innovative storytellers.

What makes Black Mirror’s writing so exceptional? Let me review through some of my favourite episodes:

  • “The Entire History of You” (Season 1): This early episode introduced the concept of memory implants that record everything you see, allowing for perfect recall and playback. The brilliance lies in how Brooker used this technology for an intimate relationship drama about jealousy and obsession. The technology serves as a metaphor for our inability to let go of painful memories, with the protagonist’s relentless rewinding and zooming becoming a perfect visualization of toxic rumination.
  • “White Christmas” (Special): This interconnected anthology episode demonstrated Brooker’s masterful structuring. Three seemingly separate stories converge into one devastating narrative about digital consciousness and punishment.
