A young martial arts student approached his teacher with a question that had been bothering him for weeks.

“Master,” he said, bowing respectfully, “I’ve been practicing for months, but I keep losing in sparring matches. How can I become a winner?”

The old master smiled, his eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief.

“Ah, so you want to be a winner? Then you must first become the best loser.”

Confused and slightly offended, the student protested,

“But Master, I don’t want to be a loser! I want to be strong and undefeatable!”

The master nodded sagely and said, “Come with me.”

He led the student to a nearby stream.

“Look at the water,” the master instructed.

“See how it flows around the rocks, not trying to push them out of the way? It adapts, it yields, and yet it carves canyons and shapes mountains over time. Be like water, my student. Learn to lose gracefully, and you will discover true strength.”

The student furrowed his brow, still not quite understanding.

“But Master, how can losing make me stronger?”
